Nonprofits to Benefit at Wine Event

Wine lovers, tree huggers and the politically minded will unite Saturday at the "Doing Good and Drinking Well" fundraiser to benefit the Greenwich Tree Conservancy and the League of Women Voters of Greenwich.

"We're looking very much forward to seeing all the folks having a social experience as well as raising money for a good cause," said JoAnn Messina, executive director of the Greenwich Tree Conservancy, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving tree and forest resources in Greenwich. "It's always fun to have fun and help at the same time."

The preholiday fundraiser to be held Saturday at Port Chester Wine at 20 Westchester Ave., Port Chester, N.Y., will include live jazz from the Rick Patrone Trio, hors d'oeuvres courtesy of Greenwich Ave.'s own Meli Melo, and wine and food pairing suggestions from the store's wine distributors.

At a similar event last year in Banksville, the conservancy received $500 in partial proceeds. At this event, guests can choose either the conservancy or the league as the beneficiary.

"We haven't had as many reservations as we did last time, but often there are walk-ins," said Messina. "The change of location to Port Chester, I don't know yet if that will make a difference."

In the spirit of the fundraiser, the first 50 invited guests to make a purchase will receive a free environmentally friendly wine tote bag. All wines from the event will be offered at a 10 percent discount and partial proceeds will be donated to the Greenwich Tree Conservancy or the League of Women Voters of Greenwich.
