No Banned Books: Read Whatever You Want

There's no need to fear the off-limits reading list. In celebration of Banned Books Week, the Greenwich Library is inviting its patrons to read whatever they would like, regardless of its content. Freedom week kicked off Sept. 25 and goes through Oct. 2.

According to Kate Petrov, the library's public relations officer, Banned Books Week stresses the importance of having unpopular or unconventional viewpoints for those who wish to read them. The celebratory week enforces freedom of information and brings to light the harms of censorship.

According to the American Library Association's Office for Intellectual Freedom, a book challenge is a formal written complaint asking for a particular book to be removed from school curriculum and library shelves. More than 10,000 book challenges have been recorded since 1990. In 2008, there were 513. Many of the books in question are for children.

All of the libraries in Greenwich are encouraging the community to explore their reading freedom. For more information, call 203-622-7948.
