A new candy store has found its sweet spot on Greenwich Avenue. And for resident Katie Cosby, it was impossible not to stop by. "Walking past, you can't help but look in, and it's so enticing," said Cosby, who brought her nephew Jack McHugh, 11, and niece Claire McHugh, 6, to the shop Wednesday. "It's a sweet delight to have Sweet Teez on Greenwich Ave. to add color and joy to the children and Greenwich patrons."
When you walk into the store, you're met by a rainbow of candy, clusters of unique gifts and sugarcoated delights that would make any mouth water. For kids, it's perfection. "It's good candy that you can't find just anywhere," said Jack, who loaded up a bag from the wall of candy dispensers with soda poppers, Jolly Ranchers and chocolate basketballs.
"It's awesome," said Claire, with her bag of chocolate rocks, Oh Baby's, SnoCaps and mini-gumballs. "It has good quality and things you don't usually see."
Sweet Teez isn't just for kids, but it may make you feel like one again. "It really is like a little kids candy store. It's fun, and it brings back memories from when you were a kid," said Fabio Ramirez, who was picking up NECCO wafers and a 1980s nostalgia candy box.
The founders and owners of Sweet Teez, Maria Garzona and Renata Donaghy, wanted to create a place that harkened back to simpler times. The duo made their dreams a reality when they left their jobs in May 2009.
The store's design concept was based on a single item: a spherical rainbow ribbon lamp, which became the store's signature lighting fixture. "We would literally sit on the floor and stare at the light to brainstorm what we wanted, and it came out perfect," said Garzona. "Everything on the walls, the picture frames, shelves, are all as unique as the items we carry."
They opened their flagship store in Larchmont, N.Y., in 2009 and said they always had their eye on Greenwich. The new store opened at 401 Greenwich Ave. on Dec. 18. "Greenwich is a bigger town than Larchmont, and it's a destination," said Donaghy. "People come from all over to Greenwich Ave., so that's just where we want to be."
They plan to brand Sweet Teez and hope to have stores all over the country. With a wide selection of candies, you have to wonder what their favorite treats are. For Donaghy, it's Sour Belts, and for Garzona, it's any of their Walnut Beach Creamery ice creams.
