Native American Day Served Up With Corn Exhibit

Celebrate the beginning of spring with music, dancing and food at “Native American Family Day” presented by The Bruce Museum in Greenwich.

From 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, The Bruce will delight museumgoers with a celebration of the Native American culture as it opens its doors to festivities featuring the Haudenosaunee Singers and Dancers from the Onondaga Clan.

The event, open for families with children of all ages, will also feature the Native American Foods Program, hosted by Jessica Diemer-Eaton. The program will educate visitors on all aspects of corn, including its nutritional value, how it is grown and how to prepare it for a meal.

Corn-based food such as cornbread, corn pudding and hominy, cooked by Diemer-Eaton, will be available for sampling throughout the afternoon.

“Native American Family Day” is in conjunction with the museum’s existing exhibit, “Three Sisters and Corn Maidens: Native American Maize Cultivation and Customs.” The exhibit, on display until July 31, spotlights the most popular Native American food source – highlighting how it was cultivated and cooked for tribes to eat and survive on throughout the year.

Gallery tours will be available of the exhibit, as well as a craft workshop for children of various ages.
