As part of National Alzheimers Disease Awareness Month, GADC River House is hosting its first Memory Screening Day Tuesday to serve as a jump off point for discussions about memory concerns and lifestyle changes that can occur with the aging process.
"We thought it was something important and pressing on people's minds and in the national scope," said Melissa Hopkins, the Greenwich Adult Day Care marketing and development coordinator. "We think it was important that we participate in."
An annual initiative of the Alzheimers Foundation of America, the free confidential memory screenings will be available between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the River House. Greenwich Adult Day Care registered nurses will administer five- to 10-minute screenings using a series of questions and tasks to determine if memory problems exist. According to the foundation, 5.1 million Americans between the ages of 65 and 95 have been diagnosed with Alzheimers disease.
The screening is not used to diagnose illness, but helps individuals determine whether or not to seek medical advice. Registration is required. Contact Hopkins at (203) 622-0079. The GADC River House is located at 125 River Rd. Extension in Cos Cob.
