In his new book, Paine reveals how people first came into contact with one another by ocean and river, and how goods, languages, religions and entire cultures spread across and along the world's waterways.
Paine is the author of five books and more than 50 articles, reviews and lectures on various aspects of maritime history. His earlier books include Down East: A Maritime History of Maine, followed by Ships of the World: An Historical Encyclopedia, and Beyond the Dead White Whales: Literature of the Sea and Maritime History.
