Having a loved one with a disability is difficult. Talking about it and dealing with it is even harder. The woodcut "Role Reversal: Mother and Child," on display in Greenwich, shows Stamford artist Donald Axleroad's take on a special relationship involving disability.
Axleroad, who has found a way to express the emotions surrounding contemporary issues through mythology and its characters, is very familiar with the feelings aroused by Alzheimer's disease.
"With the way society is going, we're getting more and more children taking care of their parents or loved ones."
In his exhibit "Ancient Myths, Modern Messages" at the Byram Shubert Library, Axleroad lets viewers interpret contemporary concerns through the myths of ancient civilizations. Some of his most recent work deals with the wheelchair-bound, fear of aging, fear of fate and situations where a parent becomes the child.
He often pairs lectures or other events with his exhibits. Thursday at the library there will be a reception starting at 5:30 p.m. followed by a lecture at 7. Dr. Stephen Jones, a gerontologist at Greenwich Hospital, will lead a discussion on "Healthy Aging, Memory and the Warning Signs of Alzheimer's." All are welcome.
