Greenwich Library's teen librarian Margaret Walsh, entrusted with getting young people in town interested in reading, has booked the pop rock band Kicking Daisies to perform in the library's Cole Auditorium as part of national Teen Read Week. It's fitting: This year's theme is "Books with a Beat."
"We've had a very positive response to all the Teen Read Week activities, but especially Kicking Daisies," said Walsh. "There's a big push across the board to recognize teens as a demographic in need of library services."
An initiative through the American Library Association, this year's Teen Read Week, from Oct. 17 to Oct. 23, encourages teens to read a variety of materials pertaining to music, including poetry, audiobooks and more.
"It's a misunderstood age group, and I like being the advocate," said Walsh. "There's so much for children and adults at the library, that the age in limbo tends not to be catered to. They are very opinionated; they know what they like and they'll tell you."
In the spirit of giving the kids what they want, "Books with a Beat" will begin in Greenwich on Wednesday, Oct. 20, with a Guitar Hero World Tour jam at 4 p.m. On Thursday, Oct. 21, teens can design their own T-shirts at 4 p.m.
Teens are also encouraged to submit short book reviews to the Teen Central Blog to enter into a drawing to win one of three iPod Nanos. Winners will be announced in December. The more reviews submitted will mean the more chances to win.
The week will culminate with a free concert by Kicking Daisies, an all-teen band from Milford featured as finalists for Radio Disney's "N.B.T. Next Big Thing" competition. It has performed alongside big names such as Primus and Damien Marley. The concert will be at the Cole Auditorium at 7 p.m. Saturday Oct. 23.
