GREENWICH, Conn. The following is a letter to the Greenwich community from Patti Sechi of the Armstrong Court Community Organic Garden:
This is a "Thank You" letter to all of our many friends in this community who continue to support the Armstrong Court Community Organic Garden. It is hard to believe that we are entering our fourth year as a community of gardeners. Because of all of you and our hardworking volunteer steering committee and gardeners, we have realized remarkable yearly progress in our garden and we are seeing firsthand how community gardening enhances and changes peoples lives in a very positive way. Last year we became a nonprofit organization, Greenwich Community Gardens. We started a Butterfly Garden for the children who attend Head Start and/or live at Armstrong Court, and we created extensive native plantings with support from Audubon At-Home and McArdle's Florist. With help from Whole Foods Market Greenwich, we were able to bring in large quantities of much-needed organic soil. Every year, the Garden Education Center of Greenwich generously offers us countless packets of seeds and plants. Silver Shield replaced a shed that had been destroyed over the previous winter. Other donations helped us with the costs of garden upkeep and helped us provide tools, additional seeds and plants and free garden classes. We were also able to in turn, to provide Neighbor-to-Neighbor with hundreds of pounds of fresh produce. This year promises to be the best year ever! Our main focus this year will be to build up to 75 raised beds and to terrace the higher end of each garden plot, which moves us toward our goal of creating raised beds and terraces throughout the entire garden by the Spring of 2013. A local contractor has generously offered to build the raised beds for free, and he was able to purchase the lumber for us at a cost-savings. In fact, we invite you to participate as a volunteer on April 7 or April 14 from 10:00am to 2:00pm to help us install the garden beds. How will we fill these beds? Whole Foods Market Greenwich has offered, once again, to donate and deliver a mountain of organic soil that hails from an upstate Connecticut organic farm, and the Whole Foods Green Team will move all that soil into our new raised beds. This means that we will only be responsible for reimbursement of the cost for the discounted lumber and materials. Your help in defraying some of these costs would be most appreciated and would make a big difference in our garden this year. Thank you so much and please come visit us, either to get your hands dirty or just to enjoy the view!Sincerely,Patty Sechipsechi@gmail.comFounder & Garden Director Armstrong Court Community Organic GardenGreenwich Community Gardens
