Don't forget your passport as the holiday season kicks off with this year's international-themed 34th annual Enchanted Forest holiday fundraiser sponsored by the Junior League of Greenwich.
The weekend event, themed "Passport to the World," includes gingerbread workshops, a Saturday morning tea for seniors, a holiday boutique, a Saturday night cocktail party (with silent auction, martini and cigar bars included), a forest of decorated trees, a gingerbread village, children's entertainment and, of course, pictures with Santa.
"We all come from different areas, and we have a quite a few members who are from different countries, so it's nice to be able to show off and share your background with others," said Alessandra Messineo-Long, communications director for the league. "They are making different trees for their part of the world and helping the community to share world traditions."
To mark to the opening Saturday, a panel of judges will review gingerbread houses and decorated trees in the enchanted forest and give awards in such categories as best in show, most creative and most fun.
"In the enchanted forest, we also have a children's giving shop: a cash-only, kids-only store for children under 5," said Messineo-Long. With the help of a junior leaguer, kids can pick out inexpensive items and wrap them to give as gifts.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich, 1800 E. Putnam Ave. General admission is $10 for adults, $5 for seniors and children under 12, and free for children under 2 years old. Family admission admits six people for $30, and family weekend entry allows six people for $50.
