John Sorrento, 105, Greenwich Town Hall Custodian

GREENWICH, Conn. – John J. Sorrento, a longtime Greenwich resident, died April 26 at Nathaniel Witherell Nursing Home. He was 105.  

Sorrento was born Dec. 1, 1905 in New York City to Philip and Antonia Bottone Sorrento. Educated in Greenwich schools, he was employed by the Town of Greenwich for more than 32 years as a custodian for town hall, with an additional eight years working part time. 

He was a parishioner of the Sacred Heart Church and a member of Redman’s Lodge 46 for more than 50 years. A former volunteer of the Amergerone Fire Co. for more than 36 years, Sorrento volunteered at Nathaniel Witherell Nursing Home and served on the auxiliary board. 

Sorrento also volunteered at the Greenwich Senior Center as a special policeman. He was married to his wife, the late Olga Dennis Sorrento, for 62 years. Sorrento was remarried to Dorothy Marino Sorrento, who predeceased him in 2010.  

He is survived by a daughter, Gwen Horvath; two stepsons, Carmine and Robert Marino; a granddaughter; three nieces and three nephews. 

Calling hours are 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Fred D. Knapp and Son Funeral Home in Greenwich. A funeral service will immediately follow at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be private.
