Johanna Smeriglio, 83, Longtime Greenwich Resident

GREENWICH, Conn. – Johanna Rose Smeriglio of Greenwich died May 31. She was 83.

Smeriglio was born in Greenwich to Lena and Charles Angotto on June 23, 1928. She graduated from Greenwich High School in 1948. Smeriglio started working as a nurses' aide at Greenwich Hospital before becoming a chef's helper at various restaurants. 

She was a member of the Harvest Time Assembly of God Church, Friendly Connections and the "Greats" at the Greenwich Senior Center. Smeriglio enjoyed quilting, knitting and singing with the Silvertones. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking, traveling, square dancing, cake decorating and time spent with her family and friends. 

Smeriglio is survived by her husband, Emil Smeriglio; her daughters Louise (Michael) Cogan, Charlene (Doyle) Passmore, Roxanne (Marc) Kuppersmith; a son, Thomas (Susan) Smeriglio; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by four brothers, Anthony "Mac" Angotto, Joseph Angotto, Charles Angotto Jr. and Vincent "Sam" Angotto; and a son-in-law, Anthony Santana. 

Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Castiglione Funeral Home in Greenwich. Funeral services will be held on Friday at Harvest Time Assembly of God Church. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Greenwich.
