Marji Lipshez-Shapiro, education director of the Connecticut ADL, will lead the discussion.

Lipshez-Shapiro created the program known as “Names Can Really Hurt Us” in 1995. It has proven to be an effective model for building respectful high school communities, generating powerful student speakers and changing school environments.

“A lot of kids hurt,” she said in a statement. “In a forum like this, they can hear their own voices, they can make a difference."

In addition to her work with the ADL, Lipshez-Shapiro teaches graduate courses on anti-bias education for teachers at Southern Connecticut State University.

The workshop will be held at the Greenwich Civic Center, located at 90 Harding Road, Old Greenwich on Oct. 23 at 6:30 p.m.
