His Wine Cellars Are So Fine

If you are looking for some inspiration on how to turn a hobby into a career, look no further than Evan Goldenberg. His love of wine and cigars led him to create some of the finest wine cellars and humidors in the New England region.

"It's a passion," said a jovial Goldenberg as he ran a hand over a case of vintage port during a tour of his personal wine cellar. His personal cellar's 7,000-bottle capacity looks better-stocked than most wine shops, and he's only half-full at the moment. "Once you have a space in a home dedicated to storing and protecting wine, you just want to fill it," said Goldenberg.

At two ends of the luxurious cellar are custom-built humidors holding the best imported cigars he can get. Just about every length and ring gauge is represented, and the aromas are strong.

Goldenberg made a guinea pig out of his brother-in-law in 1993 and designed and built his first wine cellar. It wasn't perfect, but it provided the learning experience he needed to create a growing list of referrals. Eventually he added humidor design into the mix, integrating them into the cellars.

Today, technology lets Goldenberg know if a cellar he built is acting up before the owners are even aware. Sensors monitor and control all of the environmental factors. Any problem is reported back through the Internet. His designs have twice graced the pages of Wine Spectator.

In his own home, the passions for wine and cigars are evident everywhere. Goldenberg even decorated his home with art he created from cigar boxes and wine sealing wax and foil. "There is nothing more relaxing than sitting on the terrace and enjoying a nice port with some buddies," said Goldenberg.
