Head to Bruce Museum for King Day Activities

School will be out Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, so why not head over to the Bruce Museum for a day that will include crafts and special performances.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday the museum will hold special performances of the play “Struggle for Freedom.” The presentations by Young Audiences of Connecticut's Collective Consciousness Theater are meant to complement the museum’s MLK day theme “Our Civil Rights.” The program, suitable for students in grades 5 and up, gives voice to nine prominent American freedom fighters, including King, Crispus Attucks, Fannie Lou Hamer, Rosa Parks, Thurgood Marshall, William Lloyd Garrison, John Brown and Shirley Chisholm.

“Struggle for Freedom” was written by Dexter J. Singleton, executive director of Collective Consciousness Productions. Three actors bring the historical figures to life  through monologues, scenes and vignettes. The play includes gospel music and other freedom songs from the civil rights era.

Kids will also get the chance to make “I have a dream” buttons and add their self-portraits to the Circle of Friends mural. All events are free with museum admission: $7 for adults, $6 for seniors and students and free for children under 5 and museum members. The Bruce Museum is located at 1 Museum Drive in Greenwich.  

King, an icon of the civil rights era, was best known for his “I have a dream” speech at the 1963 March on Washington. He was assassinated in 1968 in Memphis, but his human rights crusade lives on. The federal holiday was enacted in 1983 and is traditionally observed on the third Monday of January.
