Have a Sparklin' But Safe Fourth

It's the time of year when fireworks and sparklers become some of the main sources of entertainment. Using sparklers on our country's birthday is as customary as barbecues and swimming.

Sparklers and fountains are the only legal firework items in Connecticut and users must be at least 16 years old. According to the Greenwich Police Department, some packaged fireworks may contain fireworks that are illegal in Connecticut. These items are snakes, party poppers, smoke devices and anything that releases a flame.

Parents should also be aware of the dangers and safe practices when using sparklers. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says sparklers burning hands and legs cause 16 percent of all consumers' firework injuries. Sparklers can reach almost 2,000 degrees.

The National Fireworks Safety Council advised parents to always supervise children with sparklers and have them wear closed-toe shoes and stand at least six feet away from a person using sparklers.
