Sheindlin, who has owned a home in Greenwich, turns 72 on Tuesday. The lawyer, judge, television personality, and author was born on Oct. 21, 1942, in Brooklyn, N.Y.

She started her career as a corporate lawyer with a cosmetics firm. Later she joined the New York court system as a prosecutor in the Family Courts and was promoted to supervising judge in the Manhattan division of Family Court.

As a lawyer, she prosecuted child abuse cases, domestic violence, and juvenile crime and  earned a reputation as a "tough" judge, known for her fast decision-making and acerbic wit.

She is better known as "Judge Judy," whose television show debuted on Sept. 16, 1996 and began its 19th season on Sept. 8, 2014.

Spawning from her well-known presence in pop culture, Sheindlin has been parodied in the media, including on "Saturday Night Live," and "The Simpsons.

The court show has earned her numerous awards and honors, including a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in February 2006, the Broadcasting & Cable's Hall of Fame in October 2012 and first Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Legal/Courtroom Program on its 15th nomination on June 14, 2013.
