Greenwich's Rob Mathes Nominated For Tony Award For Work On 'The Last Ship

GREENWICH, Conn. -- Cos Cob musician, composer and arranger Rob Mathes was nominated Tuesday for a Tony Award for Best Orchestrations for his work on the Broadway musical "The Last Ship."

The winners will be announced June 7, when the Tony Awards airs live on CBS from Radio City Music Hall.

Mathes, a 1981 Greenwich High School graduate, co-produced the last three albums for Sting. The rock star wrote the book and music for "The Last Ship," which is based on his own childhood in a ship-building town in England.

Previews of "The Last Ship" started Sept. 29, with the official opening Oct. 26. The musical closed Jan. 24, with Sting joining the cast for the last six weeks. Sting was also nominated for a Tony for Best Score.

Mathes has also produced recordings by Rod Stewart, Carly Simon, Lou Reed, Bettye Lavette, Vanessa Williams, Matthew Morrison and Panic At The Disco. He was the musical director for President Barack Obama's 2009 inaugural concert and has been musical director for the Kennedy Center Honors for the past decade.

Mathes received the 2012 Emmy in the Outstanding Music Direction category for his work with "The Kennedy Center Honors," which airs on CBS each holiday season.

He also composed string arrangements for Bruce Springsteen's latest album, "Wrecking Ball," and performed with Springsteen at the 2012 Grammy Awards.

Mathes was also nominated for a Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Orchestrations and Sting for Outstanding Music for "The Last Ship." The winners will be announced May 31 at the Town Hall at 123 W. 43rd St. in Manhattan.
