Greenwich Women's Groups to Sponsor Clothing Drive

GRENWICH, Conn. – Greenwich residents who have gently used clothing, toys and baby equipment around their home may want to consider donating to local families during the Junior League of Greenwich and Mothers for Others’ third donation and distribution drive this month.

The Junior League’s Done in a Day Committee and Mothers for Others Donation and Distribution Drive will be held April 21 at Greenwich Second Congregational Church, located at 139 East Putnam Avenue. The groups will be join the church’s Outreach Committee, Greenwich Social Services and Family Centers to distribute the items to families in need on Friday, April 27 and Saturday, April 28.

The Junior League’s committee recently met with Karen Giannuzzi, founder of Mothers for Others, to review the group’s wish list, which included shelving units, clothes racks, clear storage bins to help organize the drive and distribution. The committee plans to provide these needs, including the construction of the shelving units, and will also donate a selection of arts and crafts to keep the children busy on the day of distribution.

“Each year, our [Done in a Day] committee finds new projects partnering with local non-profit organizations where, with a little bit of effort and energy, we can collectively help make a difference in the lives of local families,” Anne Miller, president of the Junior League of Greenwich, said in a prepared statement.

“This clothing drive is an exciting new project with the Junior League and will have real meaning and purpose for families in need, primarily locally,” Giannuzzi said in a release. “No other organization in Greenwich solely collects and distributes these types of items. It’s exciting to know we are making a difference.”

The Mothers for Others organization focuses on filling the needs locally first and, then if there is a surplus of donations, the organization has donated to families in other communities, both nationally and internationally, including Haiti and the Middle East,. However, Giannuzzi said the primary focus is local.

“We schedule these drives to encourage families to donate things they no longer need and we help families who are in need of these things but may not be able to afford them,” said Giannuzzi. “It’s a win-win for everyone.”
