David Weil has been a Red Cross volunteer for just a year. So he was both surprised and humbled to learn that he had been named Volunteer of the Month at the Greenwich Red Cross.
"This attention is so antithetical to why I volunteer," Weil said. "I do it because I believe in the Red Cross and giving back to the community. I don't [volunteer] for anything else but what is in my heart."
Weil, 61, was recognized for his active and willingness participation as a volunteer. Over the past year, he has worked at blood drives registering donors and making they receive proper nourishment after giving blood. He said working the blood drives has been a good fit for him and that he tries to be available whenever someone is needed.
His love of people sent him into the hospitality industry. Before his days at the Red Cross, Weil managed the Showboat Hotel, now called the Delamar Hotel, on Steamboat Road. Weil said his people skills come from his parents. "I'm just a product of that," he says.
Andrew Sindell, director of community services, said, "In my few years with the Red Cross, I have not come across many volunteers who posses such a high level of friendliness and openness when talking with blood donors as David does."
Weil spends the rest of his time running Summit Entertainment, a DJ and karaoke company he has owned since 1994. You can also find him walking his Lhasa-poo, Annie, every day at Bruce Park.
I enjoy [volunteering] because its worthwhile, self-satisfying and gratifying on a very personal level to know that I can give back to the community," Weil said. "I wake up every morning with the knowledge that I have it better than a lot of people."
