Greenwich Traveler Turns Passion Into Exhibit

Av Rivel has traveled through Egypt, Israel and Turkey, capturing local life through his camera lens. But he didn't expect his passion to ignite such an interest in the Greenwich community. "I enjoy being with the locals," he said of his journeys. "I like to go off the beaten track."

A collection of his work, "Travels With My Camera," is on exhibit at the Round Hill Community Church. As a young boy, Rivel experimented with photographs and did a few projects in high school.

He pursued a career in manufacturing electronic medical equipment for more than 40 years, which allowed him to be on the road often. His passion for photography was rekindled later through his travels. "You see so much and you want to capture it," Rivel said. When explaining his style, he mentioned turning around and seeing a camel caravan in the desert in Egypt. "Many of my photos are grab shots," he said. "You just have to take it."

Rivel calls himself a world traveler and wants to do more. After going across Europe and through Africa twice, he said there are still places on his bucket list that haven't been checked. "I try to go on two vacations a year," he said. "I think the next place I'd like to go to is Scandinavia and Alaska." Rivel also mentioned getting to Australia and New Zealand.

"What moves me is the unusual, incongruous and the beautiful," he said. "Travels with My Camera" is on display at the Round Hill Community Church until Feb. 23.
