Greenwich Scouts Build Pinewood Derby Cars at Asbury Millwork Shop

GREENWICH, Conn. -- Greenwich's Pack 10 Wolf Den -- comprised of second graders -- gathered at Asbury Moulding & Millwork in Stamford, to design, cut, sand and paint their custom pinewood derby cars.

George Lindsay, Zafran Kocyba and Sam Wells recently built their pinewood derby cars at the Asbury Moulding & Millwork Shop, in Stamford. Besides being Greenwich Cub Scouts, they attend Cos Cob Elementary School.

Parents helped their sons build the cars at this shop, with a variety of professional tools -- including band saws, belt sanders, oscillating sanders and a drill press -- and lots of space. Store owner Michael Simko offered to host the event for the 10 participating boys.

The pinewood derby car kits only contain a block of wood, four wheels and four nails for axles, so the Scouts and their parents were able to put several professional tools to use.

"The reason it's so nice having a workshop to go to is because I'm not sure how else we would have even carved the blocks out," said Jeff Messina, a parent and adult Den leader. "Having it at Asbury Moulding & Millwork made it possible for more Scouts to be involved and craft their own cars, which ends up being more fun for everyone."
