“We got here early, and I came straight to this spot,” said Larkin, who set up camp with her family in the shade.
Larkin was one of the thousands of concertgoers who went to Roger Sherman Baldwin Park to hear legendary rockers Daryl Hall & John Oates and John Fogerty along with a host of local bands as the annual Greenwich Town Party kicked off Memorial Day weekend and the summer season.
Larkin said Saturday’s event was the “best year ever.” Sunny skies provided ample chance to catch some rays, while trees throughout the park created spots for concertgoers like Larkin to cool off.
Saturday’s sunshine and heat was a stark contrast to the first year she attended when the weather was less than ideal. “We sat there in the pouring rain, wearing garbage bags,” Larkin said of her experience then, adding that she still had a good time.
Calling Hall and Oates and John Fogarty “iconic” musical performers, she was looking forward to hearing some familiar tunes. “I love their music,” she said. “I can sing along.”
Larkin also enjoyed the party’s festive communal atmosphere and the opportunity to run into others from town.
“This is such a great thing,” she said. “It really is a place to meet new friends, run into old friends [and] have a great day out with your kids and family.”
Larkin’s experience is just what the organizers of the party had envisioned. After seeing a similar unifying event in Spain, the event’s brainchild sought to create a similar experience in Greenwich.
Held annually on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, the party aims to bring the town together through live music, local food, and family-friendly activities.
The event, which was sold out this year as per usual, is sponsored by the Greenwich Town Party Inc., a nonprofit organization. Sponsorships and substantial donations from town residents and local businesses provide the majority of party funding each year, according to organizers.
Each donation to the Greenwich Town Party above $25 is matched by one generous donor. Tickers ranged from general admission at $85 (with discounted senior tickets and free tickets for children 12 and under) to sponsorships for $1,250 and up.
