Day-to-day, Laurie Meek works out of her Greenwich home and office to help others get a handle on their lives. However, give this organization guru a chance and she'll happily saddle up and ride with the best of them.
Meek last year celebrated her 40th birthday by riding in the Grand Entry parade for the country's largest continual running livestock show and rodeo, the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. The opening ceremony features flag bearers galloping into the arena on horseback.
Friends from her days growing up in Texas got her saddled up for the celebration. "It was just an absolute blast, I would definitely do it again," she said, sitting in her kitchen.
The previous year she had taken her son and daughter to the show to share some of her childhood experiences. A plaque with a picture of Meek and her son with a young goat hangs in her kitchen.
"I took the kids down to see what the show was about before my birthday so they could see what the Grand Entry was all about," said Meek, looking up at the photo.
Meek wasn't born a Texan. She moved there from Michigan and spent much of her life in the state. Her family moved to Greenwich early enough for her to finish high school in Connecticut. "I always refer to myself as a displaced Texan," she said.
Growing up she wanted to be her dad's secretary. After college, Meek returned to Greenwich where she worked on her own for 10 years. Two years ago she started LNM Home and Office Management with the help of a sorority sister, Beth Schlater.
Meek's specialty is making her clients lives more organized. For at least a portion of the work, she doesn't even need to be there. A lot of her tips and advice come in the online variety, too.
Meek offers a variety of tips through her blog and tips of the day that appear on the LNM Home and Office Management website. She also offers the occasional free webinar with helpful advice.
For clients who need more guidance but from the comfort of their own home, she also offers online boot camps. The website lists all of her available services, including personal assistant, as well as links to her blog and tips. Several items are being gathered into small booklets.
Perhaps biggest tip for wrangling life's clutter is persistence. " In some ways it's almost like dieting. If you don't keep it up, if you just let it fall behind, it just sort of takes on a life of it's own," said Meek.
