GREENWICH, Conn. Just in time for Mother's Day, Mothers for Others distributed an inordinate amount of clothes, books and other gently used baby items to more than 60 Greenwich families in need, said group founder Karen Giannuzzi.
It was wonderful to see people from all over the area coming together for this particular day, said the mother of four. It creates an incredible community project.
The drive, which was held April 27, collected items such as strollers and high chairs, which were sorted by Giannuzzi and her crowd of volunteers on the second floor of the Second Congregational Church. Families found through Greenwich Social Services, Neighbor-to-Neighbor and Greenwich Family Centers then picked up the gifts to take home.
Yesterday a woman brought in a stroller to be donated, and I gave it to another woman who needed it," Giannuzzi said.
Since the group was founded last year, many have partnered with Giannuzzi on the community project. The Greenwich Police Silver Shield Association, for example, donated new infant car seats to families supported by Mothers for Others. The Junior League of Greenwich loaned its services last year as well, by way of a $2,000 grant, which was used to buy coat racks, shelves and other supplies.
The Junior League of Greenwich also plans to recognize Giannuzzi for her community service at its annual gala this spring.
If you would like to donate clothing, toys or baby equipment, Mothers for Others will take items for children ranging in age from infants to 14.
