Greenwich Luncheon To Feature 'Preppy' Author

Don’t forget your pearls and pastel twinset at this year’s sixth Greenwich United Way United Sole Sisters Luncheon and Fashion Accessories Boutique. The author of the bestselling “The Official Preppy Handbook” will be the featured speaker.

The United Sole Sisters luncheon, scheduled for noon Thursday, April 14, at the Greenwich Country Club, is sponsored by the Sole Sisters, a group of 150 women committed to learning about community needs through educational presentations and visits to local agencies. They raise funds throughout the year with events, all culminating in the spring luncheon.

Celebrated author and broadcaster Lisa Birnbach was 21 when she wrote “The Official Preppy Handbook,” a tongue-in-cheek reference guide touching on aspects of upper-class, old-money society in the 1980s. Birnbach is a correspondent on “The Early Show” and has written 20 books since the handbook.

Supporters will shop for tote bags, polos and vests produced by Vineyard Vines, all bearing variations on the Sole Sisters signature “Pink Shoe” logo, during the pre-luncheon. Eighteen vendors will be selling stylish merchandise ranging from jewelry to leather goods and scarves during the boutique, opening at 10 a.m. After shopping, a luncheon will follow, including a presentation about the Sole Sisters and commentary from Birnbach.

All funds raised by the Sole Sisters this year will help the Greenwich United Way strengthen local nonprofit programs that have increased in demand during the economic recession. Since its founding seven years ago, the group has raised $500,000 for Greenwich United Way.

For ticket prices, reservations, patron and underwriting information, visit the United Sole Sisters website or call Greenwich United Way Director of Development Tom Gabriel at 203-869-2221.
