Maybe you've heard of a five-star hotel, but what about a five-star library? In fact, the Greenwich Library was recently named a five-star library by the Library Journal for a second year.
"The simplest way to explain the local and regional success of the Greenwich Library is to point to the indefatigable dedication of the staff, the trustees and an army of Friends volunteers to fulfill the mission and vision of the library," said Carol Mahoney, library director.
Greenwich was ranked 10th in the U.S. among other public libraries with budgets of $5 million to $10 million. The Library Journal created a new assessment tool in 2008 for public libraries. Each library is evaluated on its visits, circulation, program attendance and public Internet use. In 2010, more than 7,000 libraries were assessed and 258 of those received star ratings.
Library Journal is one of the oldest and most respected publications that cover the library field. It is a business-to-business magazine read by more than 100,000 library directors, administrators and staff in academic, public and specialty libraries.
Darien Library was the only other Connecticut Library to receive five stars. It was in the $1 million to $5 million budget category. The article appeared in the Oct. 1 print edition and is available online.
