GREENWICH, Conn. A remembrance of those who died Sept. 11, 2001, will be held Monday at Greenwich Hospital, which will also pay tribute to the professionalism displayed by the hospital staff during that historic time.
We invite the community to join us as we honor the men and women who lost their lives and the hospital employees who were on high alert during the events that unfolded that morning and in the weeks to come, said Frank A. Corvino, the hospitals president and chief executive officer. Many of those employees still work here today. They remember calming and caring for patients, visitors and each other, as calls flooded the switchboard and emergency plans went into effect.
The ceremony will take place at the 9/11 memorial sculpture in the hospitals Carl and Dorothy Bennett Community Garden at 3 p.m. The garden is located outside the Watson Pavilion on the hospitals main campus, with entrances from Perryridge Road and Lake Avenue.
The keynote speaker will be the sculptures creator, Silas Seandel, who witnessed the attack from his studio near Ground Zero. He will explain how his impressions that day influenced his work.
The 8-foot sculpture rests in the southwest corner of the garden, in line to the Twin Towers site. Part of the inscription on the memorial reads: This sculpture, with its two gleaming steel spires rising out of the distressed footprint, represents the indestructible American spirit, which cannot be extinguished.
Corvino will start the ceremony, followed by an invocation by the Rev. Eddie Lopez and remarks from Greenwich First Selectman Peter Tesei.
