Members of the Greenwich Police Explorers traveled to New York City last Saturday to learn about the history of the New York City Police Department and get a live canine unit demonstration.
At Grand Central Terminal, a lieutenant with the Metropolitan Transit Authority's Canine Unit greeted the group and taught them about the unit's work pre- and post-September 11. Then they walked the glass floors, open only to authorized law enforcement officers, to oversee activity in the main concourse of the terminal. Afterward, the group was led to a demonstration at a platform in a train, where the dogs showed off their skills in finding explosives through scent.
After the seminar, the explorers went to the New York City Police Museum, where they learned about the history of the department as well as Sept. 11 from the NYPD's perspective. On display in the museum were items found at Ground Zero, including officer's weapons, the radios from patrol units and the lights from the top of a patrol unit.
