Greenwich Deputy Fire Marshal Fronio Dies at 58

GREENWICH, Conn. – John Dominick Fronio Jr., 58, a Marine Corps veteran and deputy Greenwich fire marshal, died April 12 at Greenwich Hospital after a brief illness. 

A Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Riverside. 

He was born Aug. 19, 1954, in Port Chester, N.Y., to Marie and John Fronio Sr. He served in Vietnam as a Marine sergeant from 1971 to 1974, receiving the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Expert Rifleman Badge. Later in life, he was awarded the Connecticut Veterans Wartime Service Medal. 

Fronio worked for the town of Greenwich from 1993 to 1995 in the Public Works Department. Before that, he worked in construction. He also was a volunteer firefighter with the Sound Beach Fire Company. In 1995, he was appointed to the Greenwich Fire Department, most recently serving as a deputy fire marshal. 

During his tenure, Fronio was responsible for developing the dry hydrant and cistern water supply system for the backcountry. He also coordinated the combined fire and police departments fire investigation team, juvenile fire-setter counseling and the awards ceremony for firefighters. He was promoted to deputy fire marshal in 2009. 

Fronio worked on the pile for many days in New York after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. He enjoyed spending time at the log home he built in Roscoe, N.Y., where he loved to fly-fish, hunt and trap.

He is survived by his wife, JoAnn; a son, Joseph Fronio and wife Maura; a daughter, Jennifer; his parents, Marie and John; a sister, Linda Fronio; four brothers, Louie, Anthony, Steven and Frank; and two grandchildren.
