Brooke Lillie sat on the lawn outside the Greenwich Arts Council headquarters with her 2-year-old son, Isaac, soaking up the sun and the strains of Im Beginning to See the Light.
We came to do some shopping, the Greenwich resident said, and we were walking by and saw the band. Its a beautiful day and they sound so great. [Isaac] loves music and the instruments, so hes having fun.
The music was provided by the Greenwich High School Jazz Band. The event was the towns spring festival, Art to the Avenue. The annual affair featuring 135 artists on Greenwich Avenue and its side streets kicked off Thursday night with musical performances, dancers, artists and, luckily, warm weather.
Its a beautiful day and I came out specifically to hear the jazz band, said Cathy Buck, who has two children at Greenwich High School. The music is keeping me here.
Art to the Avenue, presented by the Greenwich Arts Council, is in its 15th year. About 130 retailers participate by showcasing sculpture, abstract works, collages, landscape oil paintings and photography in their store windows. Avenue stores become galleries through the month of May, said the councils Tatiana Mori. Every year it grows, so were pleased with the communitys support in this effort. You definitely see the moms out, and the strollers out, and its a fun family event.
People strolled Greenwich Avenue Thursday, and many, like Dottie Martin, were drawn to the music of the high school jazz band. I heard the music, and the sunshine is just glorious, so I had to stop, said Martin, a Massachusetts resident who was in Greenwich for business. I come from an arts-focused town, so it reminds me of home.
