Green Networking Comes to Town

One woman’s concerns with water quality in Greenwich harbor have launched a local networking group designed to spark environmental action. “I was looking into my backyard,” said Jessica Brockington, a former Manhattan community organizer who moved to Greenwich over five years ago, “and part of my ethic is, you take care of your corner. And if everybody takes care of their corner and their own footprint, then suddenly everything changes.”

So Brockington, who also ran a newspaper in Manhattan,  started Green Drinks Greenwich, a local unit of the 759-chapter international organization Green Drinks.  The group is so named because members meet informally over cocktails, frequently in restaurants, to discuss the green movement. Brockington said she hopes people who are passionate about the environment will come together and exchange information and ideas to bring about change in Greenwich.

“At the first event, I was talking to one guy who was the lawyer who successfully sued to ban pesticides in public schools,” Brockington said. “Greenwich has so many environmentalists. It’s such a resourceful town, and the resources that are often talked about are typically in terms of money. But I think what is overlooked is the tremendous talent available to this community.”

The first event was on Nov. 10 at Boxcar Cantina (44 Old Field Point Road), the first Connecticut restaurant and the only one in Greenwich certified as Green by the Green Restaurant Association. Brockington chose the venue to celebrate Boxcar’s commitment to environmentally sound business practices.

The next Green Drinks Greenwich event will be held at Boxcar on Dec. 8 with Denise Savageau, town Conservation Commission director, as special guest. Future events will be held the second Wednesday of the month.

“I would like that harbor to be pristine,” said Brockington, “and I don’t think it’s a bad thing to shoot for.”
