Eat Right and Kick the Winter Blues

Herb Young of the Greenwich Health Mart starts his winter days with vitamins B, C and D. His trick to staying healthy – and kicking the winter blues -- is to eat a balanced diet and keep hydrated.

Ronna Corlin is a healthy eating specialist for Whole Foods Market. For her, "It's key in colder months to put more heat in your food. Whenever we cook food, it makes it easier for the body to digest. This increases the availability of the nutrients to the body. This means the food is easily absorbed."

It's tough to keep up with healthy habits in the winter when you're body wants to store fat to keep you warm. Greenwich resident Yoanna Federici keeps herself and her family healthy and lean by eating organic food and giving her children echinacea, an herbal supplement that helps the immune system. "We eat a lot of vegetables, fish and raw food for snacking," said Federici.

Corlin also notes that one in five Americans skip breakfast and those who don’t often grab something filled with sugar. "Bagels and other go-to morning foods can cause a lag in energy and weight gain," she said. "Why not fire up the metabolism? Starting the day with a clean breakfast [no sugar] will fuel the brain and body for the day and offer sustained energy."

To kick her winter blues, Greenwich resident, Angela Wilson has a lot of smoothies with banana, flax seed and acai powder. For dinner, she said she tries to mix things up between steak and chicken.

But food isn't the only way to beat the blues. The Greenwich Health Mart’s Young says, "I keep a good attitude. Laughter is key. You can't control anything that happens out there, but you can always laugh."
