GREENWICH, Conn. Donald Michael Curry of Riverside died April 23 after a brief illness. He was 87.
Born Dec. 8, 1924, in New York City, he was the son of the late Sally Dunn Curry and Frank Ignatius Curry. He lived with his family in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn, N.Y., until 1938, when they moved to Riverside.
Curry graduated from Greenwich High School in 1942. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II as an airplane armorer instructor in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He received an honorable discharge as a first lieutenant on Feb. 4, 1946.
After the war, Curry graduated from Niagara University in 1950 with a bachelors of science degree in economics. He later received a masters degree in economics from the University of Houston. He was a member of Phi Kappa Theta for more than 40 years.
Curry began his career as a salesman at the age of 5, selling Collier's magazine door-to-door at 2 cents a copy. Later, he worked as a salesman in the fragrance field and then became regional sales manager for Highlights for Children magazine for 20 years. After a brief retirement, Curry worked as a substitute teacher in the Greenwich, Stamford and New Canaan school districts.
He also served as a member of the Stamford Republican Town Committee from 1968 to 1972, chairman of the Connecticut Conservative Union from 1973 to 1976 and president of St. Mary's Holy Name Society from 1994 to 1997. Curry loved to swim, hike and play tennis. He also enjoyed attending local high school football games and watching the New York Yankees.
Curry is survived by his wife of 47 years, Gladys Lorraine Aster Curry; and a brother, F. Kevin Curry. He was predeceased by two brothers, John Vincent and Richard Joseph Curry.
A funeral service was held at Leo P. Gallagher and Son Funeral Home in Stamford, with burial at Woodland Cemetery.
