Block Party Supports Officer In Need

The Greenwich Police Department and the Silver Shield Association, the town's police union, sent out a 10-13 Sunday, a universal code for an officer in need. Although no one was in imminent danger, the bottom of Greenwich Avenue was packed with community members showing their support for Sgt. Roger Petrone of the Greenwich Police Department at a block party fundraiser.

Petrone was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig's disease in 2007. The disease damages motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord that gradually paralyze the body. Lt. Kraig Gray says Petrone, who was active in the Criminal Investigations division, has been on the force for over 15 years and is respected and well-liked.

Police department volunteers asked for a $10 at the door that goes directly to Petrone and his eight-year-old daughter, Sydney. Thataway Café, Sundown Salon and MacDuff's Pub provided food and beverages. The band Short Bus provided music.
