The sexy three-inch stilettos in vibrant colors and patterns make women weak at the knees. And "Sex and the City's" shoe-obsessed Carrie Bradshaw made them a household name. Wednesday evening, their creator, Manolo Blahnik turned up at Richards on Greenwich Avenue to chat and sign copies of his second coffee table tome, "Manolo's New Shoes."
Greenwich resident Angie Sall brought her daughter Evie, a student at Greenwich Academy and aspiring fashion designer, plus Evie's favorite pair of mom's Manolos. "She brought the ones I like to play dress up in best," said Evie.
"I think this is fabulous," said Sall. "It doesn't happen often that you get to meet an icon."
The 68-year-old designer was very taken with Greenwich. "I have never been here," he said, "but I have heard so much about Greenwich. It surpassed my expectations. You could be in Paris or Rome, but it's in Greenwich and it's fantastic."
Fans of the charismatic Spaniard lined up around the upper-level of the store to get their books and shoes signed. More than 150 of Blahnik's sketches are included in the book. He said they "express his current inspirations and passions -- Africa, architecture, botany, Russia, and urban life." Blahnik said he chose them in a spontaneous manner.
"It is a certain kind of shoe that a woman wants," said Blahnik. "I guess I am a feminine person. I think every man has a feminine side. I think mine is just much more."
Anna Maria Palmiotto came from New York City to get her Manolo wedding shoes signed by Blahnik and to show them off to the designer. "I'm wearing Manolos right now ... it's something special to meet him," Palmiotto said.
