To the sound of cowbells ringing, bike riders in the Tri-State Trek to end ALS descended Greenwich Avenue Sunday afternoon just before a rainstorm hit.
Riders raised money to combat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or "Lou Gherig's disease," through the ALS Therapy Development Institute. At this time, the final fundraising tally has not been made. Each leg of the race honored a person who is afflicted with the disease. Some riders arrived early in Greenwich to ride several times up and down the steep, windy John Street to show their dedication to the cause and to honor Greenwich Police Sgt. Roger Petrone. A 16-year veteran with the Greenwich Police Department, Petrone was diagnosed with ALS in 2007 and remains on active duty in Criminal Investigations.
Riders began in Newton, Mass., on Friday and by 2:40 p.m. Sunday, the riders took their final victory ride down to Roger Sherman Baldwin Park.
