GREENWICH, Conn. Bernice Mary Hupal, of Greenwich, died April 24 from complications of pneumonia. She was 85.
Hupal was born April 2, 1927 in Port Chester, N.Y., to James and Grace Fogarty. In her youth, she played basketball and softball and later participated in bowling leagues.
She married George Hupal Oct. 3, 1948, after a two-year courtship. While her children were in school, Hupal worked to help with family finances and her last job was with the U.S. Postal Service.
A two-time survivor of cancer, she is remembered by family for her support and hearty laugh. Hupal was an avid reader, with boxes of worn paperback novels to prove it. For many years, she was regular around the card table. A longtime member of St. Pauls Catholic Church, she recently also enjoyed attending a home Bible study.
Hupal is survived by a daughter, Kathleen (Rod Thompson) Hupal, of California; three sons, Frank (Eileen) Hupal, of Stamford, Michael (Laurel) Hupal, of Greenwich, and Timothy (Heidi) Hupal, of Greenwich; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. She also is survived by a brother, James Fogarty, of Florida; a sister-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by husband, George; a brother, Jack Fogarty; a sister, Charlotte Pietruzka; and a son, Johnny.
Calling hours will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Castiglione Funeral Home in Greenwich. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church in Greenwich. Burial will follow at St. Marys Cemetery in Greenwich.
