More than 91 artists from 22 states flocked to the Bruce Museum's 29th annual Outdoor Arts Festival, including George Bucher, a sculptor from Sunbury, Pa., who traveled a few hundred miles to be a part of the two-day event.
It was Bucher's first time as an exhibitor, and he was having a great time as he explained his unusual sculptures made out of bailing twine and cellulose. "Sculptures and memorials have always been for the people who have died," he said. "I have taken the dead out of sculpting and have no excess waste, either."
The annual event at the Bruce draws thousands of visitors each year. It has won several awards for quality, standard and hospitality. Exhibitors compete for cash prizes in various categories, but the two major awards are the "Museum's Choice Award" and "Best in Show."
Kitty Butt, a Weston resident, brought her family and their beloved pooch, Zinnia, to the show. "I was reading about it in the paper and thought it was a good idea for the weekend," said Butt. "It is so great, and the exhibits are wonderful."
According to festival Director Sue Brown Gordon, the museum strives to showcase the talents of each artist. "They are encouraged to interact with the festival patrons, providing an entertaining and educational cultural experience.
Rick Preston, a photographer from Miramonte, Calif., said, "It is my second year, and the festival is perhaps my favorite. The ambiance is nice and everyone is very friendly."
The festival is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday on the grounds of the museum. Tickets are $8 for adults; and children 5 and under are free. For more information, call 203-869-0376.
