The leaves are turning, from green to yellows, oranges, and reds, and people's tastes in wine are turning with them. "They're putting away the rosés and crisp whites and moving toward more full-bodied wines," said Carol Kanter of Horseneck Wines in Greenwich. "What's big right now are wines from Argentina and Chile -- they're excellent wines and are great values."
As the weather gets cooler, the social scene shifts from picnics to indoor dinners, and Kanter has noticed an increased popularity of braised dishes such as beef bourguignon and osso buco, where the meat is cooked in wine. "I always say, don't cook with a wine you wouldn't drink," said Kanter. "It doesn't have to be a hundred-dollar bottle, but it should be decent wine."
Kanter said the popular varietals from Argentina are Malbec and Cabernet, while the hot import from Chile is Carménère, the Chilean equivalent of Malbec.
Another seasonal trend driving the wine industry is the upcoming election. "There are lots of fundraisers, dinners and rallies and so forth," said Kanter. "They serve a lot of wine, but are looking for a good value. Fortunately, it's possible to get excellent wine without spending a fortune."
