Romeo and Juliet Comes to Greenwich

GREENWICH, Conn. – Hold onto your rhymed couplets, drama lovers. Romeo and Juliet, the classic Shakespearean tale of young love gone horribly wrong, is coming to town. June 26 through July 8, the celebrated drama festival, Shakespeare on the Sound, will retell one of the English language’s most recognized love stories in a wholly new way.

But—and here’s your spoiler alert—don’t expect a happy ending for this intrepid but ill-fated couple. All the tragedy, raw emotion and gratuitous violence you would expect from a good Shakespearean drama will still be on display, just with a few contemporary twists.

Performances will be held at Roger Sherman Baldwin Park (100 Arch St. in Greenwich) and are free and open to the public, with suggested donations of $20 for adults and $10 for students happily accepted. Bring a blanket, a picnic and a bottle of wine to watch the sorrow unfold in all its juicy, poetic detail. Shows begin at 7:30 p.m., but you should spread your blankets early, as seating is first come, first serve.

Can’t make the Greenwich shows? Not to worry. The theater company will move the play to Rowayton beginning July 18. Check the Shakespeare on the Sound website for more details.
