New Canaan officials worked with the network diagnostics company Ookla earlier this summer to determine where cell phone service needed to be improved. In June, testers drove more than 125 miles of the town's roads and found that 90 percent had poor to very poor signal strength, which impacts reception and speeds.
Now they want to test the signals at homes, but they'll need residents' help.
To help the town gather more data about service in homes, the New Canaan Utilities Commission is asking residents to download the Speedtest by Ookla app to their phones and run a speed test at their houses. Once with the Wi-Fi on and again with the Wi-Fi turned off.
Residents have until Nov. 1 to conduct the 30-second tests.
Results will automatically be sent to Ookla, but officials say residents should also send it to their cellphone service provider.
The data collected will be used to help officials identify the areas with the most need and work with service providers to improve reception and data speeds in those areas.
