The talk will take place at 11 a.m.during a meeting of the Retired Men's Association Of Greenwich (RMA).
Markoff has written about technology and science for almost 40 years and has been with the New York Times since 1988 where he appears in the paper’s weekly Science Section. He lectured at the University of California at Berkeley School of Journalism, and is an adjunct faculty member of the Stanford Graduate Program on Journalism. He has won many prizes, including a Pulitzer Prize and four nominations for Pulitzers.
His talk will cover how robots are poised to transform today's society as completely as the Internet did 20 years ago. Consider: Self-driving cars; Intelligent links to computers (Siri), lights-out robotic manufacturing; robots delivering drugs in hospitals and mail in offices; and robotic surgery.
Markoff considers these innovations and draws on his newly released book to discuss the future of humans and robots. Will computer systems augment human activity or to replace it? Will robots wipe out jobs for all but the super-talented? How will our economy–and our social safety net–work?
