Simonson's debut novel, "Major Pettigrew's Last Stand," was a New York Times best seller, a best book of 2010 and cited as a favorite among book clubs worldwide. Simonson’s new novel, "The Summer Before the War," is set in East Sussex in the late summer of 1914 where a formidable local matriarch pushes against the establishment for the appointment of a female Latin teacher. The true limits of progress are tested as this small Sussex town and its inhabitants go to war.
According to an advance review in Kirkus, “the book is beautifully plotted and morally astute…Aficionados of Downton Abbey and The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society will sigh with pleasure.”
Simonson was born in England and spent her teenage years in a small village in East Sussex. A graduate of the London School of Economics with an MFA from Stony Brook Southampton, she is a former travel advertising executive who has lived in America for the last three decades, both in Brooklyn and Washington DC.
