On April 24, 1916 – Easter Monday – a small group of Irish patriots declared Ireland to be an independent republic and launched an armed rebellion against Great Britain to gain Ireland’s freedom. The British army quickly put down the rebellion; however, the executions of the leaders of the rebellion created outrage both in Ireland and around the world setting in place a series of events that led to the independence of Ireland.

On Sunday, the Hibernians will raise the Irish flag at Town Hall. The proclamation that was read in Dublin to start the uprising will be read and a short talk on the significance of the Easter Rising will be given. In addition a bagpiper will perform.
