The lecture will be at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich on Monday, Oct. 19, from 10 to 11:15 a.m.
Kwon, a Joan Tisch Teaching Fellow at the Whitney Museum of Art, will discuss modern art in New York in the 1920s and '30s, as it relates to Charles Harold Davis' late career.
This lecture will consider Joseph Cornell's engagement with nature over his career. Like Charles Harold Davis, Cornell (1903-1972) evoked all manner of natural phenomena - including clouds, stars, oceans, and animals – in his work. By considering the way Cornell transformed everyday ephemera into enchanting environments, this lecture will address the relationship of mysticism and nature in American art.
Kwon is currently working on a dissertation titled "Vernacular Modernism: Joseph Cornell and the Art of Populism" while in residence as a predoctoral fellow at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
She has worked as a curatorial assistant at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and a Joan Tisch Teaching Fellow at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Her work has been supported by grants from the ACLS/Luce Foundation, the Mellon Foundation and the Getty Research Institute, among others.
