Edwards will discuss the biggest and brightest galaxies in the Universe. Dominated by old stars, and bathed in one million degree gas, these monsters are typically found at the center of vast galaxy clusters. Edwards will explain how they grew so large and what this can tell us about their evolution, and she will end by considering our place in the Universe.
Edwards is a lecturer in the Department of Astronomy of Yale University; is chair of the Hoffleit Undergraduate Summer Scholars program; and studies today’s largest galaxies and how they have built up their mass over time. She held positions at the California Institute of Technology and Mount Allison University in Canada.
Astronomy lectures at the Bruce Museum are open to the public. Admission is free to Bruce Museum members and ticket holders; others by donation.
