As nationwide headlines increasingly give coverage to developments in Alzheimer’s research, there’s another form of dementia on the horizon that not many people know about – Frontotemporal Degeneration (FTD).
“Diagnosing Frontotemporal Degeneration, the Dementia No One Knows About,” will be presented by Dr. Edward Huey and Jill Goodman, certified genetic counselor. Participants will learn about FTD, its symptoms and behaviors and how the disease differs from Alzheimer ’s disease.
Huey, an assistant professor of psychiatry and neurology at Columbia University Medical Center who specializes in FTD, will explain how trained health care professionals can look for features that rule out other diagnoses and identify features that pinpoint FTD.
Goodman is a senior staff associate and genetic counselor at the Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer’s Disease and the Aging Brain at Columbia University. She will discuss the role genetics plays in a diagnosis of FTD and assessing the hereditary risk in a family.
The presentation, co-sponsored by River House Adult Day Center and the Connecticut Frontotemporal Dementia Foundation, Inc., is open to caregivers, health care professionals and members of the community. Light refreshments and snacks will be served.
