Gourmet Eatery Opens In Historic Riverside Location With A Familiar Name

GREENWICH, Conn. — Generations of children visited Ada’s in Riverside after school for candy and sweets. But after the death of the shop’s proprietor, Ada Cantavero, the beloved community staple closed.

After extensive renovations to the 19th-century building, Ada’s Kitchen + Coffee recently opened in the space, offering the community gourmet coffee, sandwiches, salads, and, of course, candy.

While the menu may be different than the original Ada’s, which just sold sweets, Michael Pietrafeso, a Greenwich High School graduate, said he tried to keep as much of the original structure as possible. “We preserved everything we could,” Pietrafeso said.

The building, which dates to the 1850s, was a challenge to renovate. Pietrafeso said it had six roofs, four sidings and no real foundation until renovation work began.

During renovations, the store retained its historic shingles, for example, but workers pumped insulation into the walls. In between those walls, Pietrafeso now serves fresh farm-to-table food.

PATH Coffee in Port Chester, N.Y., supplies the coffee for his shop. PATH roasts the coffee every Tuesday and delivers to Ada’s every Wednesday. “You can’t get any fresher than that,” Pietrafeso said.

His menu includes some traditional breakfast favorites with an elegant contemporary twist. For example, his Ada’s English Muffin, includes bacon and eggs topped with bearnaise sauce.

For lunch, he serves the Meatball Parm and Kale + Quinoa along with other items, which may change with the seasons.

Pietrafeso said the feedback has been positive. Adults who grew up visiting Ada’s as children are coming back to the shop to check out the new menu, he said.

“The first day we got mobbed,” Pietrafeso said. “I didn’t expect it to be right off the bat."

The shop is located at 112 Riverside Ave. in Greenwich. For more information, visit its website here.
