French Eclectic Home Earns More Honors For Acclaimed Greenwich Architect

GREENWICH, Conn. – Douglas VanderHorn, an award-winning and classically focused Greenwich architect specializing in residential design, has been honored once again by athome Magazine — this time for a spectacular French Eclectic home.

Douglas VanderHorn’s award-winning 10,400-square-foot French Eclectic home, is a beautiful waterfront sanctuary surrounded by evergreens and opening toward Long Island Sound.

The design was the winner in athome's Eighth Annual A-List Awards for Fairfield County, in the category of Traditional Architecture Greater than 7,000 Square Feet.

VanderHorn, who lives in Darien, is known for using classic themes with contemporary elements, with green innovations and smart home technology.

Douglas VanderHorn’s award-winning 10,400-square-foot French Eclectic home is a beautiful waterfront sanctuary surrounded by evergreens and opening toward Long Island Sound.

“With this home, my goal was to blend that historic provincial feel with a modern plan to take full advantage of the views of the Sound,” said VanderHorn. “From the street, the architecture is more regular and restrained, while the rear elevation is fully windowed, more playful, and incorporates a floral parterre, topiary gardens and terraces.”

Stylistically, it follows French provincial precedents of limestone construction and also features a rustic wing adjoining the main house.

The family spaces appear almost as a 400-year-old French Barn with wide-plank floors, heavy timbers, and reclaimed antique elements. The home benefits from modern innovations, including geo- thermal heating and cooling, LED lighting and smart-home functionality.

Athome honored the 2017 A-List award winners at a gala event last month at the Palace Theatre in Stamford.

He took home the A-List award in the same category in 2015 for his Greenwich waterfront shingle home, and in 2012 for his beautiful French country estate design. In addition to receiving the top award in the largest A-List category, VanderHorn was also a finalist in the Living Space and Pool House categories.

Athome Magazine’s A-List Awards showcases the best homes in New England and the architects and designers who create them.

In addition to the athome award recognition, VanderHorn’s colonial revival pool house was recently recognized at the Cottages & Gardens Innovation in Design Awards, presented by Room & Board Home Furnishings.

Earlier this year, VanderHorn was also featured on the "New England Living" television show with host Parker Kelley on Episode 9. Most recently, VanderHorn was profiled in the September issue of Greenwich Magazine.
